Best Coolers For Camping

How To Choose The Best Coolers For Camping

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. When camping, it’s important to have all necessary indoor and outdoor gear, including a cooler to store food and drinks.

Coolers are an essential part of any camping trip, so choosing the right one is important. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the best coolers for camping and provide tips on how to choose the right one for your needs.

Types Of Camping Coolers

Igloo Camping Cooler

There are multiple types of coolers available on the market, each with its own set of features. The most common types are:

Soft-sided coolers

Soft coolers are made from fabric and have an insulation layer. They’re lighter than hard-sided coolers and more portable. Here are some features of soft-sided coolers:

Light Weight

These coolers are available in vinyl or fabric and are lighter than hard-sided coolers constructed of rotomolded plastic. When it comes to size, they’re rather tiny, and what you put inside will make up the bulk of the weight.

Portability

The last thing you want to take with you when trekking or enjoying the great outdoors is anything that restricts your freedom of movement. A soft sided cooler is ideal for this purpose since their tiny size and lightweight construction make them very transportable.

A hard cooler must be carried long-distance to your campsite in a vehicle or some other sort of long-distance transportation. On the other hand, soft-sided coolers come with shoulder straps that allow you to carry them like a backpack or rucksack.

Storage

These coolers are easily collapsible, as opposed to hard coolers, which are rigid. As a result, soft-sided coolers don’t take up much room at all. When it’s empty, you can simply roll up a soft cooler and store it somewhere else.

Hard-sided coolers

Hard-sided coolers are made of rotomolded plastic and feature thicker walls for better insulation. They’re heavier than soft-sided coolers but offer more durability. Here are some features of hard-sided coolers:

Better Insulation

One advantage hard-sided coolers have over their soft-sided cousins is that they’re better insulated. This is due to the fact that they have thicker walls. As a result, they’re better at keeping things cold for longer periods.

More Durable

Hard-sided coolers are also more durable than their soft-sided counterparts. The thick walls and sturdy construction make them less likely to break or be damaged.

Capacity

Hard-sided coolers come in a variety of sizes, from small to large. If you’re going on a long camping trip or need to store a lot of food and drinks, a larger hard-sided cooler is the way to go.

Electric Or Powered Coolers

Electric or powered coolers are a type of hard-sided cooler that features an electric motor and fan to circulate air and keep things cool. Here are some features of powered coolers:

Keeps Things Cooler For Longer

One advantage of electric or powered coolers is that they can keep things cooler for longer periods of time. This is due to the fact that they have a fan that circulates air and keeps things from getting too warm.

Portable

Another advantage of electric or powered coolers is that they’re more portable than other types of hard-sided coolers. This is because they’re often smaller in size and come with wheels, making them easy to transport.

Now that you know the different types of coolers available let’s talk about how to choose the right one for your needs.

How To Choose A Camping Cooler

Here are some things you should keep in mind when choosing a camping cooler:

Ease Of Transportation

You’re going to have to lug this thing around, so make sure it’s not too heavy when empty and that it has some form of handles or wheels for easy transport. If you get a bigger one, wheels are an absolute must. The last thing you want is a hernia from trying to lift a 60-quart cooler into the back of your truck.

Double-check the weight when it’s fully loaded, too, so you know how much your end destination can handle before you get there. You don’t want to have to leave half your food and beer behind because the cooler was too heavy.

Most hard-sided coolers have handles on the sides for easy transport, but some also come with a shoulder strap or wheels for even easier mobility.

Size is another important factor to consider when choosing a camping cooler. You want to make sure it’s big enough to hold all of your food and drinks, but not so big that it’s difficult to transport.

Safety Against Water And Animal Damage

Choose a cooler that will keep your food and drinks safe from the elements. Hard-sided coolers are often made of rotomolded plastic, which is durable and resistant to water and animals.

Soft-sided coolers also come with various features that make them resistant to water and animals. For example, some have waterproof zippers and linings, and others have built-in drainage systems.

No matter what type of cooler you choose, make sure it has a good seal to keep water and animals out.

Camping Duration

How long are you going to be camping? If you’re only going for a weekend, a small cooler should suffice. But if you’re planning on being out in the wilderness for weeks at a time, you’ll need a larger cooler that can hold more food and drinks.

Plan Your Activities In Advance

One of the best ways to make sure you have a great time camping is to plan your activities in advance. This way, you’ll know what you need to pack and you won’t be scrambling to find things to do when you’re already on vacation. Some things you may want to consider doing are:

  • Hiking
  • Fishing
  • Kayaking
  • Campfire cooking
  • Stargazing

Be Prepared For Your Food Needs

A camp with lots of smoke coming out of a pot

Part of the fun of camping is cooking over a campfire. But even if you’re not planning on doing any cooking, it’s important to be prepared with enough food to last your entire trip. When packing food for family camping trips, consider:

  • How many people you’re feeding
  • Any dietary restrictions or allergies
  • How long you’ll be camping
  • What kind of activities you’ll be doing
  • Will you have access to a cooler?

Once you’ve considered all of these factors, you can start planning out your meals. If cooking is not your thing, consider packing easy-to-make foods like sandwiches, trail mix, and granola bars.

Don’t Pitch Up Under A Tree

A camping tent

Pitching your tent under a tree may seem like a good idea at first. After all, trees provide shade and protection from the wind.

However, pitching your tent under a tree can be risky. If a strong storm blows through, there’s a chance that branches could fall and damage your tent or even hurt you. It’s best to pitch your tent in an open area away from trees, just to be safe.

Choose The Right Tent

A camping tent

When it comes to choosing a tent, there are many factors to consider. Some things you’ll want to keep in mind are:

  • How many people will be using the tent?
  • What is the weather forecast?
  • Do you need a waterproof or water-resistant tent?
  • What is your budget?

If you already have a tent, be sure to inspect the rain fly for leaks and seal any gaps.

Make A Campfire Safety Plan

If you’re planning on having a campfire during your trip, it’s important to have a safety plan in place. Before you build your fire, make sure to:

  • Find a safe location away from trees, bushes, and dry leaves
  • Clear an area around the fire pit
  • Build a ring of stones around the fire pit
  • Never leave your fire unattended
  • Extinguish your fire before you go to bed

Pack The Right Camping Gear

One of the most important parts of having a successful camping trip is packing the right gear. Depending on where you’re tent camping and what activities you’re planning, you’ll need to pack different items. Some essential items to pack are:

  • Tent
  • Tent pegs
  • Sleeping bags
  • Pillow
  • Camping stove
  • Fuel
  • Lantern
  • Flashlight
  • Matches
  • First-aid kit

Practice Setting Up At Home

If you’re new to camping, one of the best things you can do is practice setting up your tent at home. This way, when you get to your campsite, you’ll know exactly what to do and you won’t have to waste time figuring it out.

Check For Campsite Availability In Advance

A campsite

If you’re planning on camping during peak season, it’s important to check for campsite availability in advance.

Many popular campgrounds fill up quickly, so you’ll want to make sure you have a spot reserved before you arrive.

To find out if a campsite is available, you can:

  • Check the campground’s website
  • Call the campground
  • Stop by the campground office

Pack A Camping Checklist

Dealing With Bugs

A campsite

Bugs are inevitable when you’re camping. Whether you’re dealing with mosquitoes, ants, or flies, there are a few things you can do to minimize the annoyance.

Some things you can do to keep bugs away are:

  • Use bug spray
  • Avoid sweet-smelling fragrances
  • Wear long sleeves and pants
  • Keep food sealed and in coolers
  • Eliminate standing water
  • Use citronella candles

Water Supply

A busy campsite

When you’re camping, it’s important to have a plan for your water supply.

Depending on where you’re camping and what kind of amenities are available, you may need to bring your own water or purify the water from a natural source.

If you’re bringing your own water, make sure to:

  • Pack enough water for everyone in your group
  • Pack more than you think you’ll need, just in case
  • Rotate your water supply so that you’re using the oldest water first

Natural sources of water like lakes, rivers, and streams can be used for drinking, but it’s important to purify the water before use. There are many different ways to purify water, including boiling, filtering, and using iodine tablets.

Cooking Food While Camping

Some food in a plate

One of the best parts of camping is sitting around the campfire and enjoying a delicious meal. If you’re new to camping, cooking food can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.

There are several different ways to cook food while camping, including:

  • Campfire cooking
  • Grilling
  • Camp stove cooking

If you’re not sure how to cook a particular dish while camping, there are plenty of resources available online or in your local library. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things!

Also make sure never to cook inside your tent! This is a fire hazard and can be very dangerous.

Cleaning Up While Camping

A family roasting marshmallows

Keeping your campsite clean is important for both environmental and safety reasons. Some things you can do to keep your campsite clean are:

  • Pack out what you pack in – this means that if you bring cans or bottles, make sure to take them with you when you leave
  • Don’t leave food out – this will attract animals and bugs
  • Clean up any messes right away
  • Don’t bury your trash – animals will dig it up and make a mess

When in doubt, follow the Leave No Trace principles. These principles are designed to help campers minimize their impact on the environment.

Protection Against Wildlife

A family roasting marshmallows

When you’re camping, you’re likely to encounter some type of wildlife. While most animals are harmless, there are a few that can pose a threat. To protect yourself from wildlife, it’s important to:

  • Make noise – this will scare away animals that might be lurking nearby
  • Be aware of your surroundings – keep an eye out for signs of animals such as tracks or scat
  • Avoid leaving food out – this will attract animals to your campsite
  • Keep your distance if you see an animal – don’t approach them, no matter how cute they are!

For bear Encounters:

If you’re backcountry camping, there’s a great chance you’ll see a bear. If you do, make sure you never run from a bear, just slowly back away and leave the location. If you encounter a black bear, make yourself seem enormous by shouting and clapping your hands while continuing to retreat.

What To Wear While Camping

Hikers hiking on a field

What you wear while camping will depend on the weather and the activities you have planned. In general, it’s a good idea to layer your clothing so that you can easily adjust to changes in temperature.

Some other things to keep in mind when packing clothes for your trip are:

  • Bring clothes that can get dirty – you’re going to be doing a lot of outdoor activities, so don’t bring your best clothes
  • Sturdy shoes are a must – hiking boots or closed-toe shoes are ideal
  • Make sure you have enough socks! Nothing is worse than wet, cold feet

Camping With Pets

If you’re planning on bringing your furry friend camping with you, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure that the campsite you’re planning to visit is pet-friendly.

  • Some other things to consider when camping with pets are:
  • Packing enough food and water for them
  • Making sure they have current ID tags in case they get lost
  • Keeping them on a leash at all times
  • Cleaning up after them – don’t leave their mess for someone else to deal with

Car Camping? Bring These Items!

A campfire

If you’re car camping, you have the luxury of being able to bring more items with you than if you were backpacking. This means that you can bring items that will make your trip more comfortable, such as:

  • An air mattress or sleeping pad – sleeping on the ground is hard, so an air mattress will make things much more comfortable
  • A camp kitchen – this will make it easier to cook meals while camping
  • Camp chairs – these are great for sitting around the campfire or just relaxing at your campsite
  • A cooler – this is essential for keeping food and drinks cold

Quick Camping Tips And Hacks

A Clean campsite

Here are some quick tips and hacks to make your camping trip more enjoyable:

Pack wipes and hand sanitizer: Camping can get messy and you don’t always have a sink and soap readily available. Hand wipes and sanitizer are always good to have on hand.

Pack a flashlight or headlamp: A flashlight can be useful for finding your way around at night, or for reading in your tent. A headlamp is even better because it frees up your hands.

Take a reusable water bottle: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Reusable water bottles are better for the environment and will save you money in the long run.

Take a comfy pillow: A lot of people forget how important a good night’s sleep is. If you want to be well-rested for your hikes, make sure to pack a comfortable pillow.

Wear sunscreen: Don’t forget the sunscreen! Even if it’s cloudy, you can still get sunburned.

Arrive during daylight hours: It’s a terrible feeling to pitch your tent in the dark, and it’s especially unpleasant if you’re a novice. Arrive during daylight hours, and keep in mind that the sun sets considerably earlier during the winter months.

Double Check Where you’re pitching your tent: You don’t want to accidentally set up camp in an area that’s been designated as off-limits, or in a place where you’re likely to be bothered by noise from other campers. Make sure to double check before you start pitching your tent.

Store your clothes in waterproof containers or plastic bags: Make sure your clothing is kept in a waterproof container or bag. This method guarantees that you have dry clothing available at all times.

Slip-on shoes: For outings and sightseeing throughout the campsite, pack a pair of shoes you can slip on and off quickly. It will save you a lot of time and effort on your journey.

Keep your clothes in your sleeping bag: Getting out of your sleeping bag may be difficult if it’s chilly outside. Having your clothes for the day ahead in your sleeping bag overnight will ensure that they are warm in the morning.

Get A Down-filled sleeping bag: A down-filled sleeping bag provides the steady insulating properties required, as well as softness, warmth, and durability.

Fill a hot water bottle to keep you warm at night: A hot water bottle is a great way to keep yourself warm at night. Simply fill it with boiling water and place it in your sleeping bag before you go to bed.

Reviews

Becky Curtis From Google Reviews Shares;

“This was an amazing find just outside of Charleston for $23/night. The staff was very friendly at check-in, and the camp host stopped by to make sure we were set. The spot we had (#11) was a pull-through on an extremely long and wide concrete pad with FHU.

The bathrooms were neat and clean, and we saw the camp hosts cutting firewood and doing other maintenance. I would say the only drawback is the proximity to the commercial airport with its early morning and late-night flights. You don’t get a spot # when making a reservation. They call you the day of to get your arrival time and assign a spot. The last ferry ride of the day out to Fort Sumter to see Evening Colors is pretty special.

Stacy Crabtree From Google Review Shares:

“We loved our time here and definitely plan on returning. The base is very pretty and well kept as well as the fantastic campground. Very clean and very friendly people here! We have 2 dogs and even they enjoyed the many long walks. (Lots of nice open, grassy places.) The campsites are a nice size with concrete pads and patios. Really, really loved it!”

19 Best Camping Accessories For RV Trips

Here is a list of must-have RV camping accessories for RV owners:

1. Weight Distribution Hitch

Weight Distribution Hitch

A weight distribution hitch can make a significant impact when it comes to towing stability. It distributes the tongue weight of a trailer, which would usually rest on a single point (the ball hitch) on the towing vehicle’s rear, across both axles. The stabilizing effect of this hitch helps to keep the tow vehicle and trailer more steady, resulting in less sway.

2. RV-Specific GPS

RV-Specific GPS

This is one of the best RV gadgets to have while camping. Its job is to help you find the best route to your destination, as well as provide you with information on things like gas stations, campgrounds, and attractions.

3. Portable Waste Tank

Portable Waste Tank

A portable waste tank is a must-have for any RV owner. It basically allows you to store your sewage and grey-water safely and conveniently, so you don’t have to worry about disposing of it properly.

4. RV Awning

RV Awning

An RV awning is a great way to provide shade and shelter from the sun and rain. There are many different types of RV awnings available on the market, so be sure to choose one that will fit your RV’s size and style.

Awnings can be either manual or electric, so if you’re looking for something that’s easy to set up, an electric awning might be the best option for you. Manual awnings are less expensive but require more effort to set up. No matter which type you choose, an RV awning is a great addition to any rig.

5.WiFi Booster And Repeater

WiFi Booster And Repeater

A WiFi booster (also known as an extender) and repeater combo allows us to park further from a WiFi tower yet still receive a signal. This is ideal for RV parks, where the best sites are often located on the outskirts or back of the park, far away from the WiFi tower. It’s also handy if you’re out and about in the city and want to get some work done over WiFi at a local café.

6. Electrical Management System (EMS)

Electrical Management System (EMS)

An electrical management system helps to prevent electrical problems. It does this by monitoring the voltage and current of your RV’s electrical system and automatically shuts off power to any appliances or devices that are drawing too much power.

This can help to prevent blown fuses, circuits, and even fires. An EMS is a great accessory for any RV owner and can give you peace of mind when camping. As an added bonus, most EMS units also include a surge protector, which will help to protect your electronics from power surges.

7. Portable Solar Panels

Portable Solar Panels

Portable solar panels are a great way to generate electricity while camping. They can be used to power lights, charge phones, and even run small appliances. Solar panels are also a great alternative to generators, as they’re much quieter and don’t require any fuel.

Solar panel kits typically come with everything you need to get started, including the panel itself, batteries, chargers, and wiring. If you’re not sure which size or type of solar panel is right for you, please consult an expert before making your purchase.

8. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

A tire pressure monitoring system is a great way to keep an eye on your RV’s tires. It consists of sensors that attach to each tire and wirelessly transmit data to a display unit inside the RV.

The TPMS will alert you if any of your tires are low on air, so you can add air before it becomes a safety issue. This is a great accessory for any RV owner, as it can help to prevent flats and blowouts.

Most systems will include four sensors (one for each tire), but some systems have additional sensors that can be placed on the tow vehicle’s tires as well.

9. Camping Stove

Camping Stove

A camping stove provides a stress-free way to cook while camping. Camping stoves can be used to cook anything from simple meals to full-blown gourmet meals. They’re also great for making coffee or tea in the morning.

Be sure to pack plenty of fuel for your stove, as you don’t want to run out in the middle of cooking a meal. And always make sure your stove is properly extinguished before leaving it unattended.

10. Portable Gazebo

A portable gazebo is a great way to create a shady oasis while camping. Gazebos can be used for picnics, relaxation, a living space, extra storage space, or even as an outdoor kitchen.

Most gazebos are made from lightweight materials and can be easily set up and taken down. Be sure to choose a gazebo that’s large enough to comfortably accommodate your needs.

11. Outdoor Rug

An outdoor rug can help add comfort and style to your campsite. Rugs can be used to define seating areas, add color or pattern, and protect your feet from the hot sand or concrete.

When it rains, an outdoor rug can also help to keep your RV clean and dry. Be sure to choose a rug that’s made from durable, weather-resistant materials.

12. Camping Chairs

Camping Chairs

Camping chairs are a must-have for any camping trip. They provide a comfortable place to sit around the campfire, at the beach, or anywhere else you might want to take a break.

If you’re planning on doing any backpacking or hiking, be sure to choose chairs that are lightweight and easy to carry.

13. Pet Safety Temperature Monitor

A pet safety temperature monitor is a great way to keep an eye on your furry friend while camping. The monitor will alert you if the temperature inside your RV gets too hot or cold so that you can adjust the thermostat accordingly.

Most monitors will also include a remote sensor that can be placed inside your pet’s crate or bed.

14. Roof Vent Cover

Roof Vent Cover

A roof vent cover is a great way to keep your RV cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The cover helps prevent heat loss through the roof vents and can also help reduce noise from wind and rain.

15. Portable Air Compressor

An air compressor is a great way to keep your RV’s tires inflated and ready to go. Most compressors will come with a gauge so you can easily check the pressure of your tires.

Be sure to choose a portable air compressor that’s small enough to store in your RV. This is a great accessory for any recreational vehicle owner who wants to be prepared for any situation.

16. RV Holding Tank Treatment

RV Holding Tank Treatment

RV holding tank treatments are a great way to keep your black and gray water tanks clean. The treatment helps to break down waste and can also help to prevent odors.

Ensure you look for a holding tank treatment that doesn’t emanate a chemical smell. Also, choose treatments that come in individual packets so that you can use as much or as little as you need. Be sure to follow the instructions on the package, as some treatments require more time to work than others.

17. Sewer Hose Kit

Sewer Hose Kit

An RV water filter is a great way to ensure your drinking water is clean and safe. The filter will remove impurities from the water and can also help to improve the taste.

Be sure to choose a filter that’s designed for use with RVs. This is a great accessory for any full-time RV owner who wants to ensure their drinking water is safe and clean.

19. Cell Phone Signal Booster
